It has been around since 1821, when Mexico won its war of independence, up to this date.

Such eagle was however different, as it symbolized the First Mexican Empire (see related links). A more modern variation with the snake was first proposed when the empire was abolished and the republic was adopted on 1823 (see related links), continuing to be used until 1864 when France conquered part of Mexico and set up a Second Mexican Empire led by Maximilian I of Habsburg, changing the national coat of arms to look similar to the French Imperial arms. After Mexico won the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867), it switched to its previous form.

During the following years, the coat of arms kept evolving but always having an eagle devouring a snake atop a cactus. The current version of the flag was adopted on 1968.
