Thomas Jefferson was a great admirer of john Locke and shared his ideas. He used John Locke's works of literature to draw inspiration int he drafting of the Declaration of Independence.

Benjamin Franklin did help to write and revise the Declaration. Although he was sick with gout at the time of the drafting, Thomas Jefferson brought him a copy of the rough draft and asked for his revisions.
Despite his other genuine contributions to the formation of the nation, his legacy will always be the Louisiana Purchase. Its a shame that a genius at creative writing will be remembered as a merchant.
