The occipital bone is a part of the skull, or calvarium. It forms the posterior part of the skull, and participates in the formation of the skull base and foramen magnum. Aside from protection of the brain and intracranial contents, it has very little function in the adult. In small children and during fetal life, the bone marrow in the skull plays a significant role in the formation of blood cells.
