There is a sensor inside the fuel tank, that's mounted on the sending unit.
It is called a levealing valve sensor and todays fuel has a high content of sulfur in it that coats the senor, and it will need replaced. First you need to make sure that the electric connectors on the top of the tank are clean and tight.
