Your problem is likely due to something with the thermocouple. That is the device that senses heat fom the pilot light- no heat, it turns off gas as a safety measure. Get a gas appliance repairman to check- they do go bad, get bent, etc. Not incredibly expensive to replace.

Having a lot of air around a gas burner is important because fire needs oxygen, which is in the air, in order to stay lit.

Why flame won't stay burning in gas fireplace?

Just a guess- but most have a sensor known as a thermocouple. This detects the heat of the flame of the pilot light, and keeps gas from flowing if the pilot light is not lit. check that your pilot light (a very small flame) is burning, and that the flame heats a small metal tube- about as big as a wooden match. If pilot is out, get it lit, and let burn for 5 minutes, and try lighting fireplace. If it still will not stay lit, the thermocouple may need replacement- they DO wear out. Check with your local gas appliance repair service. While they are fixing it, have them show you correct lighting process.

Why won't ventles gas logs stay lit?

I have a gas log fireplace that after a period of time the fire as well as the pilot light will go out. What could be the problem? Thank you, Linda Fink linda@homewinery.com <><><><> Linda, I don't know how long ago you posted this, but when you write in THIS area, your question gets routed to the "already answered" bin- I caught it by accident. Why does the gas have to be turned one after the match is lit?

If you begin the flow of gas on a range prior to lighting the match, the gas will accumulate in the air and could potentially cause an explosion. If the match is lit and placed near the source of gas-flow prior to release, when the gas is released it will immediately and properly ignite.

matches are unbelievably better than lighters, although lighters do stay lit longer they, they also produce gas , so whenever lit with a cigarrete you inhale the gas first unlike with a match.

Pilot lite on teledyne laars mini therm 2 wont stay lit?

Replacing the thermocouple that the pilot flame touches when it is lit will fix the problem 90% of the time. A thermocouple costs about ten dollars and allows the gas to the pilot and main tube to flow by generating millivolts from the heat of the pilot flame. The thermocouple is a copper wire attached by a small nut to the main gas valve near the pilot tube coming out of the gas valve.

Check that the temperature sensor is properly located (generally right above the pilot flame). If it doesn't stay lit after holding the pilot button down (per the instructions), have a repair person correct the problem.
