If you pull off the outer and inner covers under your steering column on the right side, you will find a hook that moves as the shifter moves. Attached to it is a small cable about the size of a really skinny spaghetti noodle. That is the cable that moves your gear indicator. Sitting back about 2 inches from that is a wheel that you can turn that will adjust your gear setting. Hopefully, this is helpful.
I already had the covers off to fix an electrical problem and I just happened to have that shifter problem. And what I found was that the plastic bracket holding the cable adjust nut was broken. I will now fabricate a new metal bracket.
