Both Hitler and Mussolini provided military support to Franco. The Soviet Union, however, supported the republican government. The U.S. remained neutral, a position reinforced by the fact that the Neutrality Acts forbade the sale of munitions to either side in the Spanish Civil War. Franco prevailed in 1939.
