He wanted to improve the quality of the sleeping cars. Sleeping cars have been around since the 1830's but they were by no means comfortable. He improved the quailty. During the day they are nice cusioned and comfortable seats, and at night the seats folded out into beds. They even had curtains to creat some privacy.
