Was the Roman Empire affected by the Viking invasions?

The Western Roman empire was not effected by the Viking invasions, because the Viking rise to power came after Rome's fall. However the Romans of the west were aware of them and even used Scandinavians in their army. The Eastern Roman empire had a trading relationship with the Vikings.

What roles did the goths vandals and Huns play in the decline of the roman empire in the west?

The Goths raided the eastern part of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. Their western branch, the Visigoths, were allowed to settle in the lower Danube area of the empire to escape the Hun advance into eastern Europe by the emperor Valens in 380. Under stress during a famine, they rebelled and inflicted one of the biggest defeats in Roman history at the Battle of Adrianople. The Roman casualties were high and this a large proportion of the Roman army in the east was lost. In 410 they sacked Rome. The Huns raided the eastern part of the Roman empire and exacted heavy tributes three times. They invaded Gaul, but this was repelled by a combined force of Romans, Franks and Visigoths. They then invaded Italy, but had to abandon this because there was a famine in Italy and because the Roman army in the east attacked their heartland in Hungary. Th Vandals, together with the Sueves and Alans, invaded Gaul in 406. They moved to Spain and then to northwestern Africa. From there they attacked the coastal areas in both the western and the eastern part of the Roman Empire. In 455 they sacked Rome.

When did the Eastern Roman Empire finally collapse?

In 395 Diocletian had divided the Roman Empire into a Western Empire and an Eastern Empire. At that time the second of these was the more viable part. The date generally accepted for the collapse of the Western Empire is 476, when the Germanic chieftain Odoacer took Ravenna (not that far from Venice) and overthrew Romulus Augustulus. Ravenna had been capital of the Western Empire since 402.During the fourth century, various Germanic tribes, all referred to by the Romans as 'barbarians' moved in, occupying an increasing part of the Roman provinces. In the first decade of the fifth century, the last Roman legions left Britian. It was soon overrun by Picts and Scots from the north, and Angles and Saxons from Denmark and Germany. At the same time, the legions that fell back on Rome were unable to portect it. Rome was sacked by the Vandals in 455, and the last Roman emperor deposed in 476. By this time, most of the western empire had broken up and was under control of barbarian tribes. The Eastern Empire (Byzantium) then regarded itself as *the* Roman Empire, Emperor Justinian's forces reconquered some areas of the Western Empire, in North Africa, Italy and the south of France. Then the spread of Arabs through the Middle East, North Africa and into Spain progressively alienated those areas and encroached into the heartland of the east. First the Seljuk Turks, then te Ottoman Turks took over the Middle East and Greece, with the Eastern Roman Empire shrinking to little more thant the city of Constantinople, which was taken and looted first by a Roman Catholic crusade, and finally by the Ottomans in 1453 CE, which was the real end of the Roman Empire as it is commonly known. Some pretensions were made in the east from the Dark and Middle Ages with various Germanic kings from Charlemagne in 800 CE onwards calling themselves Holy Roman Emperor, finally extinguished by Napoleon I when he conquered Austria-Hungary and its Holy Roman Emperor Francis II in 1806, and in the east where both the Ottomans from conqueror Mehmet II on, then the Czars from Ivan III also pretended to the succession of the Roman Empire as the Third Rome.

How do you think Rome's roads eventually helped lead to the downfall of the city?

First of all, the city of Rome never fell. It was sacked four times during antiquity (by the Senone Gauls in 390 BC, by the Visigoths in 410, by the Vandals ion 455 and by the Ostrogoths in 566). However, it was never conquered or destroyed. In fact the city still exists today. The Visigoths did not intend to seize Rome. They moved on to the south of Italy after the sack. The Vandal sack was an act of looting. The king of the Ostrogoths had wanted to destroy the city, but relented as he had been helped to enter the city by the Roman imperial garrison and left to pursue the Byzantine army in Apulia. The Byzantine general then retook the city. What fell was the western part of the Roman Empire, which collapsed under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. One could say that the Roman roads made the penetration of this part of the empire by invaders easier. However, the roads in themselves did not prompt the invasions. Moreover, the Romans lost political cohesion. There were usurpations and a lot of infighting and the Romans failed to deal with the invasions adequately. Therefore, if the Roman roads did help the downfall of the western part of the empire, this would have been a very relative factor.

Which empire led rome at the time of its conquest?

There was not an empire which led Rome and there was not a conquest of Rome. Rome had an empire: the Roman Empire. Although the invasions by the Germanic peoples led to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome was never conquered. Ancient Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and by the Vandals in 455, but it was not conquered. Both Visigoths and Vandals withdrew after the sack. They did so before units of the Roman army from elsewhere in the Roman Empire would catch up with them.
