The best way to safely remove rodents from commonly-used areas is a no-kill trap. You can get this in any store you can find regular traps. It's a trap that detects when the rodent is in and snaps shut, keeping him alive to release someplace other than your home!
If you'd rather not keep it/them alive you can set up a homemade trap. The only way this will work is if the rodent is on a counter or table. Put a trashcan on the floor up against the counter where you've spotted the rat. Put a light piece of cardboard or cardstock so that it is barely balancing on the counter put a treat (raisins, peanut butter, cheese, etc.) first on the counter, then make a trail to the end of the cardboard. Make sure not to put too many in a row or the rat will get its fill to early! The idea of this is to get the rat to move nearer to the end and unbalance the cardboard, sending it into the trashcan where you can dispose of it how you wish :)
