In my experience this indicates a short/open circuit in one or more of the glow plugs. Remove each in turn and test with a multimeter, but be warned, if one has gone, the other will not be far behind.
Had same problem with mine, turned out to be the main red wire going to the glow plug relay had come detached from its connector easy repair 5 mins.Glow plug relay was located just lower down than the battery on the inner wheel arch little black box with wires to and fro Good luck.......

I have the problem with my 2001 tdi jetta. On REALLY cold mornings the glow plug light actually stays on and the car starts... In the hot weather the light only stays on for a second but starts pretty well... It is when it is 50-70 degrees that the light does not stay on and glow plugs are not heating up. pls let me know if you find anything out. It's driving me crazy. My Email is mikluschak@cavtel.net
All Mercedes cars will only go to the "Start" position only once, to prevent the initiation of the starter while the engine is running. Check the glow plug light before you try to start the engine. The light has to go out before you start the car. If the light doesn't come on, then you may have a problem with your glow plug relay, or one of your glow plugs is dead.
they absorb light from before and then when it is dark they glow the absorbed light
