Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific railroad drove the last spike, a golden one with a silver hammer. The Western Union telegraph system was connected at the same time. The locomotives, ( #119 and Jupiter ) touched noses and the telegram " done " was sent to an ovation from the crowd that had gathered.
