Good is good, by itself.

Better is something which is more 'good' than something else that is also good.

Best is something that is the most good of a number of things that are good.

In English grammar, words like better, richer, poorer, happier are called comparatives, because you are comparing one thing or state with another thing or state. Comparatives refer to something (or someone etc) that is more something than something/someone else. Two things are being compared, one with the other

Words like best, richest. poorest, happiest are called superlatives, which identifies something that is the most 'something'. e.g. the most good, the most rich, the most poor, the most happy etc. A range of things are being evaluated, the thing at the top or bottom of the range takes the superlative word.

e.g. Bad -> worst. Good -> best. Sad -> saddest. Funny -> funniest.

Good is good. Very good is better. Excellent is even better, and may be even the best!
