When you are interviewing for a job, the person you are discussing the position with will usually ask if you have any questions about the position. It’s always to your advantage to have questions based on some research you’ve done on the company you are applying to, as well as some questions about the position. If you say no, you are giving the interviewer a clear indication that you either don’t have an interest in the position, or you don’t know enough about the job or company to ask questions.

Do Research About the Company

Asking questions based on research is always a good indicator to an interviewer or interviewing committee that you are eager to impress and definitely interested in the company and the position you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a position as a physician’s assistant you might say, I read an article in your hospital newsletter stating that you are expanding your physician’s assistant work force. Can you tell me how many physician assistants you currently have on staff, and how many do you plan to add?

Do not mention benefits or salary unless it is part of the discussion brought up by the interviewer. For example, if you are asked what your current salary is and what do you expect to earn in this position? You should reply based on some research you have done on the company, benefits and current salaries offered for the type of position you are applying for.

Follow Up

When the interview has ended and you know that you would really like to fill this position, let the person or committee that interviewed you know. As soon as possible, send a letter thanking the interviewer or committee for the opportunity to talk with them about the job and reconfirm your interest.
