If you have an extended desktop using 2 or 3 monitors at the same resolution and colour depth, then the amount of memory required to represent your desktop doubles or trebles accordingly. Due the high demands of graphics hardware, graphic memory needs to be as fast as possible to keep frame rates as high as possible. System memory is a compromise between speed and cost but is generally far too slow for heavy-duty graphics. Thus graphics cards generally provide their own auxiliary graphic memory which is much faster than system memory and is one of the reasons why graphics cards are so expensive.
