Cycle the key on/off 8 times and the door locks will lock and then unlock. Press the lock button on your key fob to program it

you can lock the driver side door on my 2001 ford explorer sport but it wont unlock with key nor key pad you have to go through passanger door
1998 Explorer uses a PATS II system with a transponder in the keyhead.

It may be the key, if you had one made it may not be electronic.
bring you title into the nearest ford dealership they can make a replacement with the vin #.
Does it not have a key lock by the front door handle ( that's what I did on my 1995 Ford Explorer XLT when the battery was dead )
