Was this hamster kept in a cage with any other hamsters? As it could have been murdered by its cage-mate, whilst this is uncommon with dwarf hamsters it will happen if there are two Syrian hamsters as they are very territorial and will kill for territory.
If the hamster was in the cage alone then it would be a good idea to consult a pet shop or vet.
