would you kill cats to save our native wildlife?
I'm assuming from your question you agree with animal testing and vivisection.
If a mother or father faced the prospect of seeing their offspring die slowly and painfully when for some reason they have the option of their child miraculously recovering after the act of killing a small animal, there are very few who would save the rat.
But for a product, medication or procedure to even be considered for use on the masses it must have human tests. In this day and age, there are many alternatives to animal testing; scientists can even grow human flesh. Its sad that vivisection is still such a common practice.
Many of the tests carried out on animals do not have a distinct purpose, and each test is repeated on many different beings.
'Hardcore animal activists' are just people who still retain an affinity to the earth and living things, and believe that exploiting animals for our comforts is not the way we should be. Particularly not for useless research.
I strongly suggest you watch Earthlings, a documentary outlining how we as humans have become completely desensitised to the exploitation and suffering of billions of animals per year for our own desires.

animal rights activists
United Activists for Animal Rights was created in 1987.
Depending on the degree of their belief, animal rights activists or animal welfare activists.
no. simple as that
Not at all. Actually animal rights activists fighting for animal rights show obvious signs of altruism, although they might be misunderstood or misquoted such as what happened around the nomination of famous animal rights activist Cass Sustein in the Obama administration. Animal rights activists include all sentient beings in their moral concern. It is usually argued that those who don't understand rights cannot have rights. This is of course a major fallacy which would deny human infants rights just because they have no concept of rights.
They're genetically mutating goats to produce supersilk, which is (5x?) stronger than steel. The genetic mutation is what Animal Rights' activists are concerned with.
Animals rights activists are opposed to trapping animals because of the harm that it does to the animal. The animal can be injured or killed, and even without the threat of injury it stresses the animal and traumatic.
Some celebrity activists are Bob Barker, Betty White, Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie.
Almost all animal rights activists are adamantly against testing drugs on animals.
