NZ has earthquakes all the time. It is on a major fault line.

.

Earthquakes are fairly common in New Zealand, but fortunately not usually of damaging strength. The strongest earthquakes, up to Richter 7, are in Fiordland, an area essentially unpopulated.

The Alpine Fault is expected to produce an earthquake >Richter 7 some time in the future, but forecasting is almost guesswork.
