The Canterbury earthquake was 7.1 on the Richter scale, and unusually shallow at 10 km. It is expected that the largest aftershock could be up to 6 on the Richter scale, and they are expected to last for many months. This particular fault line, previously unknown, has been quiet for at least 16 000 years - before the current glacial and gravel outwashes created the Canterbury Plains.
An earthquake. It flattened most of the town.
Depends on whether you talk about size or devastation? Devastation - In 1931, New Zealand's deadliest earthquake devastated the cities of Napier and Hastings. At least 256 people died in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake 161 in Napier, 93 in Hastings, and 2 in Wairoa. Many thousands more required medical treatment. Biggest - In 1855 a magnitude 8.2 earthquake the most powerful ever recorded in New Zealand rocked the southern part of the North Island. Caused by movement along a fault in Palliser Bay, it altered the landscape of the Wellington region and affected its subsequent urban development.
Yes. Christchurch is a city in the far south of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest city on the South Island, and the third largest city in the country. It is also, unfortunately, earthquake-prone.
Definitely. In February 2011, there was the Christchurch earthquake, which killed around 185, making it New Zealand's worst natural disaster in terms of loss of life in 80 years. This was preceded by the Canterbury earthquake in September 2010. Although this earthquake did not cause any loss of life, it was certainly the largest in 80 years to affect a major urban area.

It measured 6.3 on the Richter scale
The maximum measured intensity of the 2010 Canterbury earthquake in New Zealand was IX (9) on the Modified Mercalli scale.
In terms of the largest earthquake on the Richter Scale, it was the earthquake in Wairapa on January 23, 1855, which was 8.2 on the Richter Scale. It was the largest earthquake recorded since systematic European colonisation began in 1840. In terms of death and destruction, however, it would be a toss up between the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake and the February 22nd 2011 earthquake in Christchurch. NZ has earthquakes all the time. It is on a major fault line. . Earthquakes are fairly common in New Zealand, but fortunately not usually of damaging strength. The strongest earthquakes, up to Richter 7, are in Fiordland, an area essentially unpopulated. The Alpine Fault is expected to produce an earthquake >Richter 7 some time in the future, but forecasting is almost guesswork.
it was a 8.9 earth quake please donate to the Japanese red cross Thank You, Angel Vargas
In 1811-1812 the New Madrid earthquakes took place. I'm not sure if this is the one you mean, but I hope so. The 1812 Febuary earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale.
The biggest earthquake ever recorded in New Zealand was the Wairarapa earthquake in 1855. This earthquake had a magnitude of 8.2.
The scale goes down to -3.0, which is an earthquake equivalent to someone jumping off a small wall.
