The first jet ever shot down was on 5 October 1944 by 5 (4 Canadians & 1 American) members of 401 Sq. RCAF. Their names are: Tex Davenport, Rod Smith, Snooks Everard, George Sinclair & John MacKay (more can be found on these 5 @ acesofww2.com). Their victim was H. C. Butman of 3/KG51 flying Me262 MNR 170093. Many more German Jets were shot down by Allied propellor driven fighters after that... as well as by gunners on board propeller driven bombers too, come to think of it.
Yes. In 1965 and 1966 Navy A-1 Skyraiders shot down North Vietnamese MiG-17s.
Fighter aircraft are used to shoot down enemy aircraft.
Fighter jets were designed to shoot down enemy aircraft. Because the enemy had fighter jets of their own to protect their aircraft, it was important to make them as fast and maneouverable as possible. It should be noted that the aircraft is only as good as its pilot.
Either by well aimed anti-aircraft fire, or by other aircraft weapons, fighter or bomber.

Fighter planes are designed specifically to shoot down other planes. It was in response to bombers and reconnaissance aircraft that they wanted to prevent from flying over the ground forces. Then there had to be aircraft to fly with the bombers to prevent the enemies fighters from shooting them down.
No. The F-15 eagle is the only fighter aircraft that is one the most difficult plane to shoot down.
Yes. Difficult, and the aircraft must be at low level, but it has been done.
The F-22 stealth raptor is the top best fighter aircraft because it has it's ability to move into stealth mode and take down all four planes at a time.
Fighter bomber. The only USAF fighter bomber designed as such, during the cold war, was the F-105 Thunderchief; the primary bomber over North Vietnam. But it was also a fighter, and shot down about 27 NVAF MiGs in aerial combat (dog-fights).
No. The F-35 is a stealth joint strike fighter jet and it is barely invisible to the radar. It is also really difficult for missiles to shoot down the F-35 fighter aircraft.
In early airplanes, the wings were not strong enough to mount machine guns well out on the wings. When mounting a machinegun on the fuselage, the propellor was in the way of the gun firing (you could shoot your own propellor off!) The finally found a way to link the propellor to the machinegun, so that when the propellor was at a location where the gun would hit it, the gun did not fire. Would be embarassing to shoot yourself down.
US pilots flying propeller driven airplanes shot down German experimental jets during the last stages of WWII.
