There have been a number of women since the twenties. Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming was probably the first, in 1925; around that same time, there was a female Governor of Texas ( Miriam "Ma" Ferguson). Connecticut had a popular woman governor named Ella Grasso, who served from 1975-1980. There have been others too, including Ann Richards of Texas (1991-1995), Jennifer Granholm (2003-2011) of Michigan, and Christie Todd Whitman (1994-2001) of New Jersey.
