a 12/12. Two people grade your writing test. One person grades it out of 6 and the other person grades it out of 6. Then the two scores are added. So if one person grades it a 4/6 and another grades it as a 5/6 you get a 9/12. If the people who grade your essay have a difference of 2 or more in their scoring than a 3rd person comes and scores your essay too. So if one grades you as a 3/6 and another grades you a 5/6 would require a 3rd grader.

The highest writing score you can receive is a 12, so 11 is an excellent writing score on the ACT. In fact, if you score 11, you did better than 99% of the other test takers (according to the ACT test chart).

The easiest way to get into a top college, such as Harvard, is to have a perfect ACT or SAT score. Top schools place a high premium on having perfect standardized test scores. If a student can have a perfect ACT or SAT score, he or she can guarantee admission to Ivy League schools.

An ACT score of 36 would generally be held in higher regard than the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar.
