Eta Carinae, a highly variable star about 7500 light years from Earth, is an enormous star and has apparently "pulsed" several times in the past. In 1843, it was the second brightest star in the sky! Since then it has faded into obscurity, but continues to brighten and dim over a period of years. The star is nearly 150 times the mass of our sun, and millions of times more bright. It will likely explode in a supernova explosion within the next million or so years; the blink of an eye, in galactic time scales.
Since Eta Carinae is 7500 light years away, it takes the light from the star 7500 years to reach us. It is possible that the star has in fact become a supernova 5000 years ago - but we won't know that for another 2500 years!
