Yes. Halo did changed gaming in a way you would actually not expect.
For every shooter you play in now on the console is one part mostly coming out from Halo, the controller layout. With the launch of Halo Combat Evolved on the old Xbox did this got introduced and quickly many games took the follow.
But not even that. Thanks to Halo is the online gaming on consoles also bigger. Halo was the first breaker of the online gaming with the start of Halo 2. The matchmaking system got introduced in this one and again many other games followed it including Call of Duty.
Many clans/communities and great friendships started thanks to Halo 2 and continued with Halo 3 and Halo Reach. But a true Halo gamer who played all the games when it was hot would know that Halo 2 was the best moment.
Thanks to Halo is the world of shooters and online gaming more friendly and bigger. But lets don't say it was Halo who made it all happen, but Bungie did. I'm looking forward how their next project Destiny will turn out and I bet it will open up a new chapter in the gaming history. :)

it went from inside halo to inside gaming. because inside halo was running out of news for halo 3 so it went onto gaming in general.

To be honest the first online game i ever played was Halo 2 and that is pretty much like Halo 3. Halo 3 is a top of the line online games so that means that online gaming hasn't changed too much in my eyes. The support around it is the main thing that has changed because now you have marketplaces, friends lists, movie downloads and even game downloads coming with things like Xbox Live.
