No, it has not.

The military took over the Kursaal during the Second World War, which meant the cinema, zoo and amusements within it were closed down.

Southend is on the tip of the Thames and therefore the first point of contact if Germany was to invade the south-east coast to get into London. Therefore the area was locked down with soldiers, anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank barriers.

Despite the fact that the Kursaal was used by the military for this period, no bombs were ever dropped on it.

It did however catch fire decades after the war and had to be closed. It was eventually rebuilt and partially re-opened. The other half was demolished and turned into houses.

Is the kursaal estete in southend on sea horrible?

Southend is a nice place to go to in the summer holidays with the family, but the kursaal estate is a shithole. Loads of gangs and killing round that area. Police everywhere round that area as well. So if you're thinking to move to that part of southend, DON'T!

Why is southend famous?

Southend is home to the world's largest pier. It became a seaside resort during the Georgian era, attracting wealthy people from all over who invested heavily in Southend. Southend is also home to the Kursaal. One of the country's first theme parks. Part of it is now used for housing, but part of it is also still operational today. Southend has many galleries and museums, making it one of the recognised cultural cities of the United Kingdom. There are large shopping facilities and several theatres in the city. There are annual events held locally, such as folk festivals and "Festival of the Air". The city has been visited and stayed in overnight by British monarchs, whom approve of the flourishing, cultural centre. A large statue of Queen Victoria pointing out to the sea was built in Southend by the Victorians to signify the royal approval of the city. Historically, Southend was the location of many battles long before it was a town. Celts, Romans, Vikings, Saxons and Normans all fought and died in what is now Southend (not all in the same era of course). There is a millennia of archaeology waiting to be found beneath Southend's soil. In fact, rather recently, archaeologists discovered a brand new unknown Saxon king who was buried with many treasures, in Southend, which has re-written the British history books.
