Southend is home to the world's largest pier.

It became a seaside resort during the Georgian era, attracting wealthy people from all over who invested heavily in Southend.

Southend is also home to the Kursaal. One of the country's first theme parks. Part of it is now used for housing, but part of it is also still operational today.

Southend has many galleries and museums, making it one of the recognised cultural cities of the United Kingdom.

There are large shopping facilities and several theatres in the city. There are annual events held locally, such as folk festivals and "Festival of the Air".

The city has been visited and stayed in overnight by British monarchs, whom approve of the flourishing, cultural centre. A large statue of Queen Victoria pointing out to the sea was built in Southend by the Victorians to signify the royal approval of the city.

Historically, Southend was the location of many battles long before it was a town. Celts, Romans, Vikings, Saxons and Normans all fought and died in what is now Southend (not all in the same era of course). There is a millennia of Archaeology waiting to be found beneath Southend's soil. In fact, rather recently, archaeologists discovered a brand new unknown Saxon king who was buried with many treasures, in Southend, which has re-written the British history books.
