Plenty of times. At first they though that all neutrons, electrons and protons were the same particle. Then they realized they were different but still though they were mixed together evenly. Then some random guy said that the elections were at the outside. Then the current model was born and all those other guys tried to kill him like angry mathematicians until they invented a microscope that could see atoms and they still chased him.
