US Civil War 1861-1865. Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) 2001 to present. But there is a difference! The US Civil War was fought against an illegal nation; the Confederate States of America. But this "illegal nation" had a Government (President Jefferson Davis); an army and a navy. The US is not at war with the nation of Afghanistan; the US is performing a "law enforcement" action in Afghanistan arresting or killing (destroying) terrorists. The US is NOT fighting an army, air force, or navy of another nation. And is not at war with the country of Afghanistan.

Those nations being: Germany, Japan, Spain, North Korea, North Vietnam, etc. In "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan...the United States of America is NOT at war with Afghanistan!
