By no means. Most of the aircraft in World War 1 engaged in dogfights or gorund support missions. However given the short range, poor bombsights, and poor bomb load of these early aircraft their role was fairly minimal.

Most WW1 aircraft were very small. I have seen replica Sopwith Camel and Spad and were surprised how small and flimsy they appeared to be. Not much different from a Piper Cub, +except for being biplanes.
