You probably mean the far side, not the dark side:

  • There is no "dark side of the moon". Every point on the moon is illuminated for roughly 50% of the time, just like every point on earth. So sometimes the far side is light, and sometimes it's dark. Just like the near side.
  • None of the Apollo missions landed or traveled to the far side of the moon ... the side that's invisible from earth ... mainly because they could not have communicated with earth by radio from there.

Of course, many times. It really is no more dark than the face that we see from earth. It probably makes more sense to refer to it as the far side. Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, unless the earth's shadow obscures the sun for a time. If astronauts were orbiting the moon around the time of new moon on earth, they would look down on the far-side surface of the moon and see it fully illuminated by the sun.

What part of the moon do earthlings see?

Humans inhabiting Earth never see the dark side of the moon. The reason humans can never view this side of the moon is because the time it takes for the Moon to rotate once is the same amount of time it takes for it to orbit around the Earth. Therefore, humans will never see the dark side of the moon.

What is the name of the side of the moon that we don't see the dark side?

The Moon spins at the same rate that it orbits the Earth, keeping one face turned toward the Earth. The terms "near side" and "far side" are correct to describe the two sides of the Moon. Until the Soviet Luna 3 satellite orbited the Moon in 1959, we had no clue what the far side of the Moon looked like.

Who were first people to see the light and dark sides of Earth?

There is No light and dark side to the Earth. The Earth rotates in 24 hours, every day. You are Probably thinking of the Moon. The Moon has a light and dark side, because only one side always faces the Earth, and the other side always faces away from the Earth. The first human beings were the first people to see the light side of the Moon. The Russians sent a satellite to orbit the Moon in the 1950s and they were the first people to see images of the dark side of the Moon. On December 24, 1968, Apollo 8 (USA) with Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and John Anders orbited the Moon and they saw it's dark side. They read from the Bible, wished Everyone a Merry Christmas, and then they returned to the Earth.
