The Flying Flapjack was a unique product from Vought Aicraft Company. The XF5U was made of plywood and fabric, and was only created in order to prove that an inexpensive fighter could be produced without using valuable resources (like aluminum). No jet has ever been produced from the design. The F4U Corsair had unique gull wings in order to let the landing gear touch the ground while utilizing a 13 foot propeller. The F6U Pirate was the first jet to use the afterburner. The F7U Cutlass was tailless, and resembled a 1955-56 Chevrolet hood ornament. The F8U Crusader was the Navy's first fighter to fly over 1,000mph, but had to incorporate a tilt-wing in order to get airborne.
