This is usually a hardware fault, either in the video chip or in the screen. It does sounds like the lcd screen part is dying.
It may be the inverter or just the back light .
If the computer is under warranty, contact the manufacturer. If not, there are a number of companies that can assist with diagnosing the problem and repairing.
