• Hafsa bint Omar was the fourth wife of Mohammed. She was born about 606 and she died in October or November 665.
• Hafsa's first husband was Khunays ibn Huzafa. They both embraced Islam later and went to Madina. Hafsa was about 17. Khunays was injured in the Battle of Uhud and he died six months later.
• Prophet Muhammad then married Hafsa in January or February 625. She was not the prettiest of his wives but she remained one of his favourites. This was probably because of her lively, intelligent personality. She was never afraid to say what she thought, and Mohammed encouraged her to debate him.
• Hafsa was the only one of Mohammed's wives who could write. It seems Mohammed was pleased about this skill. He later asked Hafsa's old writing-teacher to teach her the "spell" (incantation) against skin-eruptions.
• Hafsa's closest friend came to be her co-wife, Ayesha. Although their friendship was often spoilt by mutual jealousy over having to share one husband, they would talk together all day long. They organised all the wives to protest against the new concubine, Mariya the Copt; this along with debating about the expense made Prophet Muhammad leave all his wives and live alone for a month. The next time Ayesha and Hafsa wanted to get rid of a new co-wife, they did it more subtly. They visited the bride, flattered her, combed her hair, and told her "what to say to please Mohammed". The poor girl did not realise that the words Ayesha and Hafsa taught her were the divorce formula - after she said them, Mohammed divorced her at once!
