Anorexics often suffer from many heart conditions. Commonly, it is a low heart rate and low blood pressure. A low body temperature can happen, too. Often, the heart becomes weak and is placed under a lot of strain and pressure. This can cause permanent damage, malfunction, and potentially even heart failure.

How did Karen Carpenter Died?

On February 4, 1983, less than a month before her thirty-third birthday, Carpenter suffered heart failure at her parents' home in Downey, California. She was taken to Downey Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead twenty minutes later. The LA coroner gave the cause of death as "heartbeat irregularities brought on by chemical imbalances associated with anorexia nervosa." Her divorce was scheduled to have been finalized that day. The autopsy stated that Carpenter's death was the result of emetine cardiotoxicity due to anorexia nervosa. Under the anatomical summary, the first item was heart failure, with anorexia as second. The third finding was cachexia, which is extremely low weight and weakness and general body decline associated with chronic disease. Emetine cardio toxicity implies that Carpenter abused ipecac syrup, an easily obtained emetic medicine that is only meant to be taken by persons who have accidentally swallowed poison.

What is the difference between heart disease and anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder where a person staves themselves and works out excessively so as not to gain weight. It can cause a multitude of health problems, including heart conditions and / or heart failure. There are different forms that can affect different people in different ways.

Can Anorexia Nervosa cause high blood pressure?

Anorexics tend to have lower blood pressure due to weakened heart muscles and poor blood oxygen levels/circulation.

What are the long term effects for anorexia?

Anorexia in the long-term, if not treated properly, can be fatal. The health concerns of anorexia - even if an individual is treated and recovered - can include life-long problems associated with anemia, osteoporosis/brittle bones, and heart problems.

How many people die of eating disorders every year?

Sadly, we do not have clear statistics, as many people who die from their eating disorders have listed as the cause of death other conditions, such as cardiac complications as the cause of death, thus skewing the numbers. National epidemiological studies are needed for determining the natural history, morbidity, and mortality of all eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorders and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified). There is a particular need for clearer information about mortality rates, especially for anorexia nervosa. That said, here are some stats that might help you out: * Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness * A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 - 10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 - 40% ever fully recover * The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15 - 24 years old. * 20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems

What are some health consequences of anorexia nervosa?

Most of the health consequences will more than likely be mental, since Anorexia is a disease of the mind, that is shown through the physical side effects. You're teeth won't go bad from the stomach acid like when someone is bulimic and puking constantly, but you'll probably have last effects, like thinking about going back to being anorexic, up to years after you're healthy again. This is different for everyone though.

Disease associated with anorexia?

Anorexia can psoe many heath risks. The skin can become dry and flaky, and hair can become brittle or fall out. Nails become discolored. Anorexics are at high risk to suffer from organ malfunction or failure, particularly in the liver and kidneys and especially in the heart. Low body fat and weight and malnutrition can lead to dizziness, fainting, fatigue, low blood pressure, brittle bones prone to cracks or breakages, increased risk of infection, and an increased risk of hypothermia.

Females who suffer from anorexia nervosa can have a safe and healthy pregnancy.?

While it is entirely possible for a safe preganancy to happen in a woman who suffers from anorexia, it does not often happen. Anorexia tends to leave the body with less nutrients than it needs. In a pregnant woman, she must eat and have enough nutrients for herself and the baby. Low nutrients already in the mother mean less for her and the baby when combined. Anorexia while pregnant can lead to organ damage for both mother and child, heart problems, premature birth, and low birth weight.

What is anorexia nervosa-?

Anorexia Nervosa (anorexia, for short) is an eating disorder characterized by the inability or unwillingness to eat. Those who suffer from anorexia (anorexics) feel that they are too fat and must starve themselves as a sort of extreme diet to lose weight. Often, this means a refusal to eat or a strict limitation of what a person will eat, along with intense or extensive physical exercise to burn off the calories that have been consumed when forced to eat. They also may incorporate bulimia and over-use of laxatives to eliminate perceived sources of obesity, while adult weights can plummet to seventy pounds and less. It is a dangerous disorder that can cause serious complications both mentally and physically. In severe cases, anorexia can be fatal due to organ damage from the starving body attempting to reabsorb protein from internal organs, including the heart, which often leads to heart attacks and irreversible heart and organ damage. It is believed by many who treat and study the disorder, to be caused by an altered body image and a pathological need to control things that seem out of control, manifesting in various symptoms, including refusal to eat although hungry, as a mechanism of control. But it is still not a well understood disorder.
