Help with a list of materials to do a long walk but not really across America please help?

In order to know what to bring, you need to know the kind of terrain and climate you will be in. For example, a 10-mile hike on flat ground is different from a 10-mile hike over a mountain pass. In preparing for a long walk/hike, you need to plan for changing weather by having rain gear and extra clothes, have plenty of food and water, map and compass for navigation, a first aid kit. If I'm in the backcountry, I usually bring an emergency tarp and a rope so I can build a shelter, and a filter to treat water.
