One possible problem for a failing touchscreen that can be fixed at home, though, is that dirt and grime has been deposited at the edges of the screen - For many phones, there is a small gap between the very edges of the touch screen and the external casing of the device itself.
Dirt or grime could press down on the touch screen and make tap detection difficult.
To solve this, you could try to push a thin piece of paper into the gap and scrape across the gap. Repeat this for all the four gaps on each side.
If you are adventurous, you could try to open up your phone and clean out the touch screen - But remember to use dry cloth without cleaning solutions of any sort, as it may damage your phone! Also don't forget that opening up your phone will almost always void your warranty!
