Massachusetts was found in 1498 when John Cabot saw the shore of Massachusetts and claimed it for England, but he didn't go ashore. In 1602, the Pilgrims were going to Virginia on the Mayflower, but landed in Massachusetts without trying. They took the land and used their resources sparingly until they had the first Thanksgiving. Later on, the fight for freedom helped Massachusetts grow popular because of the many events that happened during the Revolutionary War. During that, in 1776, Massachusetts became a commonwealth. Massachusetts is not a state, it is a commonwealth.
