Called "bandoliers", they were especially popular in the Philippines and were brought to America and given the name "yo-yo" in the 1920's. In the USA, yo-yos have generally seen a surge in interest, popularity, and sales about every 10 years with every generation of children experiencing a yo-yo "boom" to some extent. Relatively unchanged for generations, modern construction and design advances such as rim weighting, wider gaps, ball bearing equipped axles, and better response systems, have resulted in yo-yos that are far superior to those of earlier generations. Today some yo-yos are capable of producing spin times of over 10 minutes. This has opened the door to an array of fantastic and dizzying tricks thought to be impossible just a few short years ago.
