characteristics difference in granolithic floor finishes
Terrazzo is a floor made from a concrete type poured material. once its in place the Terrazzo worker grinds it smooth & polishes it so it becomes a great looking & almost endless floor.. Lots of schools, Post offices & hospitals use it..
Terrazzo is a type of flooring. In consists of stone chips set in mortar- when the mortar is cured, the stone is ground down and given a high polish, resulting in an incredibly durable floor. "The new airport has a beautiful blue terrazzo floor in the lobby."
Epoxy-based terrazzo can sometimes be affected by water-based liquids and mild acids, but that would usually require a lot of liquid constantly on the surface. Cement terrazzo is very resistant to liquid damage or discoloration. A lack of shine is more likely a layer of dried juice on the surface.
First Step in repairing Terrazzo is to fix the holes with matching resin and Terrazzo chips. Also fill in any cracks with matching resin. Then sand down the repairs. The next step is to hone the floor with metal diamonds, usually 50 metal diamond followed by 100 metal diamonds. Then the resin diamonds are used 50,100,200,400,800 then polish with 5x powder. Rinse off and left over haze the buff. This will give a very high shine that will last for many years. This is referred to as Terrazzo Restoration or Terrazzo Polishing http://www.colonialfloorandstonecare.com/
There are a number of dealers of Terrazzo flooring in the Sydney area of Australia. These include AMM Polishing, Western Terrazzo Restoration and Affordable Polishing.
Jackson hole
In order to retain terrazzo and minimize damage - I'm about to try this method as interpreted from Ross of Home Depot South Tampa: After removing the soft wood portion of the tacking strip away from the nails without disturbing the nails, (A) then clamp the nail with one of a variety of pliers available and gently to moderately forceful, twist each nail in place until the nail is loosened so that it can be pulled directly vertically without chipping or breaking the terrazzo/marble. Then fill nail hole with appropriate adhesive-filling is optional depending on desired appearance. (B) In some cases the nail may break, the remedy then is to cut the nail flush at floor level with special pliers (maybe $10) and then grind down (dremel) the nail flush to the floor and leave in place. The snap cutting of all the nails and grinding could avoid the twist method and minimize floor chipping and whole filling. Whichever method, it may be difficult to avoid some terrazzo chipping which may be cured by applying a selected sealant/adhesive, consider color and hardness desired. Start in an undesirable corner - thoughtful trial & error is progress and refinement.
