In the late 40s & early 50s the House Committee on Un-American Activities or HUAC started what is popularly known as the H'wood blacklist with the sole purpose of tracing communist members & persons having communist leanings it stood against American values & posed a serious threat to its democracy Un-American activities was mainly aimed at the screenwriters guild of Hollywood along-with other actors,dirs & producers the total summoned before the House, 10 persons working in the H'wood entertainment industry refused to appear and answer to the House's main question that "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist party?" taking refuge in the 1st Amendment which protects the right to freedom of speech & assembly.The then Pres of MPAA Eric Johnston in a meeting of H'wood film executives gathered in NY's Hotel Waldorf Astoria released to the press that the 10 persons who were tried for the contempt of Congress & communist sympathizers would be fired or suspended without pay & would never be reemployed till they were cleared of the contempt charges & of being a Communist H'wood 10 were director Edward Dmytryk, & screenwriters Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Albert Maltz,Sam Ornitz, Adrian Scott, J.H.Lawson, Lester Cole, R.Lardner Jr & Dalton Trumbo.
