Catholic AnswerThey are not called the seven deadly sins, except in popular culture, they are called the seven capital sins, in the Church. Nor are they found in The Bible, AS as list, they are a catechical formulation of the early church to teach people the seven "root" or kinds of sins. All of them are, ultimately sins of pride, the first sin of Satan, which cannot be overcome without God's help. So we must pray daily for the gift of humility. Listed below is a website that explains the Capital Sins, and below that a small book by the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration on how to deal with each sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains in paragraph 1866:

Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called "capital" because they engender other sins, other vices. (Cf. St. Gregory the Great, Moralia in Job, 31, 45: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855}

from the website listed below:

1 John 2:16: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world.

In the above scripture, St. John talks about three basic types of sin - The lust of the flesh (gluttony, lust, sloth), the lust of the eyes (greed), and the pride of life (pride, envy, anger). Overcoming these things should be our life's work.

From The Baltimore Catechism, volume 3:

295. Q. What are the chief sources of sin

A. The chief sources of sin are seven: Pride, Coveteousness, Lust, Anger, Gluttony, Envy, and Sloth and they are commonly called capital sins. from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

1866 Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called "capital" because they engender other sins, other vices. (Cf. St. Gregory the Great, Moralia in Job, 31, 45: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 76, 621A). They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.
