Let your horse walk around it first. Make sure it's not too high, your horse may be scared of it. Then move into at a trot and feel confident, if you're scared your horse will be too. Also have someone hold a scoop of grain on the other side and have them shake it. Give your horse a little reward after he/she goes over. Hope that helped.

The majority of the time a horse is refusing a jump, is because of the rider. Another reason might be because the horse is fearful of the jump. When you have a horse that is refusing jumps you want to bring them back to the beginning and work up. You should set up a ground pole and walk him/her over it, then turn around and walk over it again and again. Then you should gradually work up ground pole, 6 inches, 1 ft, etc. Don't smack your horse with the crop or kick him/her really hard. It will not help one bit. If you feel its your fault and you don't know how to fix it hear are some tips. You want to make sure you have a secure seat and that your lined up in the middle of the saddle. When your jumping don't drop your head to look at the jump, it can throw your horse off balance. Use your natural aids (voice, seat, legs, hands, etc) to encourage your horse. Now you have to use these correctly. Soft hands, Quiet legs, Clear signals, and a balanced seat. Make sure you have your horse checked, as this could be an issue resulting in pain (feet/body/tack). About 1-2 strides before the jump sit deep and kick/squeeze. Hope it helped!

What do you do if your horse refuses a jump in the show arena?

if your horse refuses the jump, you turn the horse around in a circle, then go a little ways away from the jump, (but not too far giving the horse time to think about how to get away with going over the jump) and then (if the jump is not too large) trot your horse over the jump giving it leg pressure up to the jump to coax it to jump. (its easier to trot over the jump than canter when your horse doesn't want to jump it) if your horse refuses a jump during a show, this will count down points but if your horse refuses a few times you are disqualified. hope that helps!

What do you do if your horse won't go over a jump unless another horse does it first?

If your horse refuses a jump, try again! If he/she still refuses, walk her/him up to the jump and let her/him sniff and look at it. Once he/she feels comfortable around the jump, try it again. If that doesn't work, you should carry a crop with you. Good luck!

What is the meaning of a scopey jump on a pony or horse?

When a horse scopes out a jump, it just means that the horse is looking at the jump trying to get a good idea of how tall/long it is and where they have to take off in order to be able to clear the jump.

In a jumper class is the horse penalized for bucking?

Yes, the rider would most likely be disqualified. The horse and rider get penalized 2 points for knocking a rail down and 4 points for a refusal of the jump. If the horse refuses the jump twice you are also disqualified.

How do you jump with a horse?

well what you do is you lean foreward and put your bottom into the air so that the horse can jump easier and better. that way you won't fall off. i remember when i was a little girl probaly in grade 1 i fell off a horse when it was jumping. Make sure the horse has plenty of slack in the reins as you jump, so that the horse has full freedom of its head. You don't want to catch him in the mouth because your reins are too tight. This will result in your horse being scared to jump. You also need enough momentum, so you have to go at at least a trot. A horse can jump from a walk, but it's easier at the trot or canter, and at a walk the horse is more likely to step over it rather than jump. Be quiet in the saddle, you don't want to unbalance the horse. And always look where you are going, not down at the horse. This goes for even when you're not jumping, but it's easy to forget and look at the horse, especialy in the jumping position. Also, do not jump if you are afraid. Your horse will notice this and get nervous. You must be confident about going over the jump. Don't get ahead of the horse because this unbalances him and if he refuses, you'll go over his head.

How high can a average but well trained Arabian horse jump?

Well that will vary from horse to horse no matter how good the training. The best way to find out is to free jump the horse and continue to raise the jump until it's clear how high the horse can jump without problems.
