He was already well aware of it. The earth's roundness had been known for centuries before, and European navigational methods relied on it.
What Columbus set out to prove is that there was a shorter way to reach India than the current trade routes. He was wrong, he underestimated the size of the earth. However when he arrived at the americas, he believed he was in India, that's the origin for why indiginous Americans were called 'Indians'.

∙ 9y agoNo. All educated Europeans of his time knew that the Earth was round. That knowledge allowed Columbus to propose sailing west to reach China and the Indies.
