∙ 7y agoA comet's tail is the most visible part. However, until the comet gets fairly near the sun, the tail will not form. A comet is made mostly of ice (and some rock,) and as the ice vaporizes with proximity to the sun, this forms the long tail. Far from the sun, where the comet spends most of its time, it does not possess a tail because the ice all remains frozen.
