Columbus landed in what is now called Puerto Rico in 1493 during his second trip to the new world. While Columbus may have been Italian, he was working for the King and Queen of Spain. Puerto Rico became a colony of Spain and over time more and more Spaniards began to move to the island. The Spanish language became the official language. In time Puerto Rico became an over seas province of Spain and everyone born on the island was a citizen of Spain regardless of one's race. In the early 1897 Spain granted Puerto Rico autonomous status a sort of partial freedom but six months later the USA invaded during the Spanish American War. By then the people in Puerto Rico had been speaking Spanish for over 400 years

How did spanish become the native language in puerto rico?

The Spanish Language came to Puerto Rico via colonization from Spain. Once the Spaniards invaded the island, it's people became subjects of the King and Queen of Spain. Spanish therefore became the official language. For over four hundred years the Spaniards immigrated to Puerto Rico to the point that today over 70% of Puerto Ricans can trace European ancestry. While the Spanish language has retained some Taino and African words in Puerto Rico the major influences to Puerto Rican Spanish are the accents from Andalusia and the Canary islands in the south of Spain.
