The great Dr. john Snows was investigating the cholera epidemic in London in 1854. He noted that the flow of patient has come from particular geographic area. Then he could find out that the particular area was supplied by one single pipe line. Then he concluded that the water got contaminated there through that pipe line. It was the land mark discovery that lead to the control of water borne communicable diseases. Now that proves the role of geographers in control of the diseases. By the way human being is the social animal. The role of every individual is very important. The most useless person can prove to be great nuisance to the society. So it is better to know that every person in the society is your relative. Every individual should be given due respect and importance. You can not be happy and safe unless every body is happy and safe. This is true for every individual inhabitant of this earth.
In 1854 there was an outbreak of Cholera in London, which killed 10,000 + people. Official investigations into this proved that cholera is a water borne disease, and was the starting point for the science of Epidemiology.
Do you mean the "Broad Street Pump" (19th century cholera outbreak in London)?
In 1854 John Snow mapped the cases of cholera in Soho, London, and realised that almost all of them were likely to have taken their water from the same pump. The spread of cholera stopped when the handle of the Broad Street pump was removed.
It was a doctor, John Snow, in London England, during the cholera outbreak in 1853. Those that drank beer, were free of the plague. Isolating a contaminated water pump, proved the theory.
Name of the physician was Dr John Snow. The cholera out break occurred near Broad street in Soho district of London. (Now renamed Broad-wick street.)
First, London is a city, not a country. And yes, Cholera can be found in almost all countries if sanitation is not adequate or water has been infected.
Cholera bacteria was first isolated by Filipo pancini 1812-1883, 84 years before he was actually credited with its discovery. A paper was published by him in in 1854 during the Asiatic cholera pandemic of 1846-63. in it he has the description of the cholera causing organism and its relationship to the disease. It was titled Microscopical observations and pathological deductions on cholera.
Snow used epidemiological and statistical methods to identify the water pump in a district of London that was the source of cholera germs that had caused an outbreak of the disease. In doing this he helped to lead the way in applying similar approaches, even before the germ theory of disease had been developed. Please see the link.
During the 1840's the residents of London suffered from influenza, cholera, typhoid fever, typhus, small pox and scarlet fever. Cholera and influenza ravaged London consistently from the 1830's to the late 1840's.
He decided to sort out the problem in London of 'The big stink', which was one hot summer where the rubbish in the Thames became an unbearable smell. He devised a sewage system. In the process of this, he figured that the dirty water may have something to do with the cases of Cholera. After turning one off the water pumps in the London Courtyard, cases of cholera in a certain part of London stopped completely. Hope I Helped.
In the middle ages people lived in small towns and villages ,until the industrial revolution which cause problems because of unclean water supplies this allowed the bacterium to spread more easily second outbreak of cholera was most certainty the worst of the outbreaks. This occured from 1829-1851 Firstly in Hungary estimated around (100,000) when the plague reached London it claimed around 55,000 people in the United Kingdom. 20,000 people died in France and finally it killed 150,000 people in Egypt with this outbreak
