She was the eldest child of Britain's King George VI, who died on February 6, 1952. The king had no male heirs, so Elizabeth was first in line as his successor. Interestingly, Elizabeth would have become queen even if her uncle, Edward VIII, had not abdicated from the throne in 1936. Edward, who became known as the Duke of Windsor and was succeeded by Elizabeth's father, had no children. He died in 1972.
