The ravages caused by the war destroyed most of the manufacturing abilities, drained treasuries and killed valuable and important manpower all over Europe. Vital infrastructure was destroyed, and relationships were torn apart.

By the time that Europe was able to rebuild it was deep in the process of war tribunals, investigations, and self-recrimination.

With the massive destruction and attendant distractions, Europe had no chance to hold it's leadership position when the US had done such a superb job of increasing manufacturing and survived the war with our infrastructure and national-self-image completely intact.
