There's a wide variation in Christmas traditions between families. And, of course, many Americans are Muslim or Jewish, or belong to other groups like Jehovah's Witnesses that don't celebrate Christmas. In the US Christmas is often more a secular holiday than a religious one, which is discouraging to many Christians.

A traditional Christmas celebration would include a Christmas tree with lights and ornaments, and often other decorations such as a wreath or outdoor lights. Christmas is the major retail holiday, and many families have large numbers of brightly wrapped gifts under the tree. Usually there's a large family dinner on Christmas Day with Turkey or Ham as the main course. Christians may attend a church service late on Christmas Eve, or on Christmas Day. (Many will attend church only twice a year, Christmas and Easter.)Hospitality is important to many during the Christmas season and there will be parties through New Year's day.

Every family has different traditions for Christmas. Christmas is celebrating the birth of Christ, so usually a lot of families read a story about Jesus Christ's birth, more commonly known as "The Nativity". Some families enjoy having each member play a part of a character in the story and celebrate that way. People give gifts to each other as a token of love and friendship and to feel the Christmas spirit. There are lots of Christmas movies that people can watch, and there are even ballets and plays about Christmas. A really famous one would be "The Nutcracker". People can sing Christmas carols, or songs about Christmas. For the little children, there is Santa Claus. They put stockings in a place where Santa will find them and put toys in there stockings for them. Some people leave out milk and cookies out for Santa and his reindeer to eat. Some families go on heyrides or sleighrides and go and look at the other people's decorations around their houses and see other fancy light shows provided by paticipating companies.

For people who celebrate Christmas in the USA, a typical Christmas day consists of opening presents under the Christmas tree in the morning then either having family/friends come over or going to another family member/friend's house to celebrate together. Here, there is usually a dinner, games, more presents, socializing, etc.

People decorate real or artificial fir trees for inside the house and many people decorate outside trees with lights, place electric candle lights in the windows and Christmas wreathes on their door. Some communities sponsor outside celebrations with a tree lighting and carolers. A gigantic fir tree is donated by someone each Christmas for display in Washington, DC. Many communities, employers, clubs, groups and churches sponsor programs for donating gifts for the less fortunate.
